Orthodontic Appliances
Arch Wire
This is a metal wire that is attached to your brackets to guide your teeth’s movement.
Bands
Bands are metal rings that go around the molars and some premolars. Bands are selected to fit tightly and are then cemented into position.
Biteplate
This is a removable appliance that is used to correct a deepbite or to assist in crossbite correction. It looks similar to a retainer.
Brackets
Brackets are small modules made of either metal or ceramic. These small modules are attached to each tooth and hold the archwire in place.
Chain
This chain is made of stretchable plastic and holds the archwires into the brackets.
Distal Jet
A Distal Jet is an appliance that corrects a Class II bite. The Distal Jet sits on the palate of the mouth and is attached to the molars using dental cement. A spring applies a continuous force to the molars, this force is what moves the teeth toward the back of the mouth. This appliance has the advantage that it offers a shorter treatment time than other appliances because it is a fixed appliance that maintains the force during the entire treatment period.
Elastics
Elastics or rubberbands help improve your bite by moving the upper and lower teeth relative to eachother. These bands are effective for treating overbites, underbites, and other types of misalignments of the jaw. They can also be used to move a tooth out of alignment or to close a gap in the mouth.
Expander
This appliance is commonly referred to as a bonded upper expander and consists of a palatal expansion screw with metal arms that are within the wire framework. The framework then surrounds the posterior set of teeth and supports the acrylic posterior bite plane. This appliance can be used to widen or narrow the upper jaw.
Fixed Retainer
Fixed retainers include a metal wire that is fixed to the back of the teeth. A fixed retainer can remain on the teeth indefinitely.
Forsus
The Forsus appliance is used to correct a Class II problem by using springs to force the lower jaw toward the front by retraining the bite. This appliance is fixed to the teeth.
Invisalign
Invisalign® is a system that straightens your teeth without braces. Instead, this system uses a series of clear, removable teeth aligners.
Lingual Arch
This device connects two molars in the dental arch (upper or lower) to maintain space.
Lip Bumper
This appliance is used to create and keep the necessary space to accommodate adult teeth without extraction in growing children. The lip bumper uses the natural strength of the muscles around the lower teeth to widen and lengthen the dental arch. The lip bumper stretches the dental arch to make the appropriate room for the adult teeth to erupt properly.
Nance
The Nance button holds teeth that are already in the appropriate position while allowing the movement of other teeth. The button keeps the molars from coming forward.
Palatal Expander
A palatal expander serves to make room in the upper jaw by widening it to align enhance the way the bottom and upper teeth fit together.
Pendex
A pendex is an appliance that is used to create space by pushing the first molars back. It consists of acrylic and wires.
Removable Retainer
A retainer serves to hold your teeth in the correct position following orthodontic treatment to align them. It allows the gums and bone to stabilize and prevent your teeth from reverting. This type of retainer is removable and can be worn all day or only at night, depending on Dr. Terrana’s instructions.
Separators
Separators are tiny bands that are placed between your back teeth. These devices are used to prepare your mouth for braces by generating a small gap between these teeth and allowing the placement of a metal band around your molar. This band will serve as an anchor for your braces within your mouth.
Thumb Crib
This device consists of a fixed wire crib attached to two back graces and is used to resolve a severe thumb-sucking habit.
Transpalatal Bar
The Transpalatal Bar (TPA) is an appliance that is fixed across the roof of the palate to fit into a soldered clip located on the bands.
Herbst
The Herbst Appliance is used to stimulate the growth of the lower jaw in younger patients who are still developing their jaw.
