Retainers

Finishing braces or clear aligner treatment is an exciting milestone, but keeping your smile in place takes ongoing care. Teeth can naturally shift over time, which is why retainers are an important part of maintaining your orthodontic results.

At Altera Orthodontics in Royersford, PA, Retainers are used after treatment to help support tooth stability while the bone and soft tissues around the teeth adjust. An experienced orthodontist could help explain how often to wear your retainer, how to clean it, and what to do if it feels uncomfortable, damaged, or lost.

Why Retainers Matter After Orthodontic Treatment

After your teeth move into better alignment, they need time to settle into their new positions. Retainers are designed to help hold teeth in place after braces or clear aligner treatment.

Wearing your retainer as directed may help:

  • Reduce unwanted tooth shifting
  • Support long-term treatment stability
  • Help maintain your bite and smile position
  • Protect the time invested in treatment
  • Reduce the chance of needing additional correction later

Retainers are not meant to move teeth like braces or aligners. Their main role is to help maintain the position of your teeth after active orthodontic treatment is complete.

Retainer Wear, Comfort, and Care

When you first start wearing retainers, they may take a few days to get used to. This is normal. Your retainer may feel bulky at first, and your speech may sound slightly different while your mouth adjusts.

You may notice:

  • Mild pressure when the retainer is placed
  • A temporary lisp or speech change
  • Slight tenderness in the roof of the mouth
  • Extra saliva for the first few days
  • A snug feeling when the retainer is seated
Retainer wear

Proper retainer care helps keep your appliance clean, comfortable, and safe to wear. Clean your retainer after meals and before bed using a soft toothbrush with warm, soapy water. Rinse it well before placing it back in your mouth.

To protect your retainer:

  • Store it in its case when not wearing it
  • Never wrap it in a napkin or tissue
  • Keep it away from pets and small children
  • Avoid leaving it in a hot car
  • Do not place it near heaters or hot appliances
  • Do not clean it in the dishwasher
Clear Braces

We do not recommend using toothpaste to clean retainers because it can be abrasive. Tiny scratches may make it easier for buildup to collect on the appliance.

Retainer Replacement and Retainer Insurance Program

A retainer should feel snug, but it should not cause sharp pain or feel like it is forcing your teeth to move. If something feels wrong, it is better to contact us sooner rather than wait.

Call our office if your retainer is:

  • Lost or accidentally thrown away
  • Cracked, bent, or warped
  • Chewed by a pet
  • No longer fitting properly
  • Causing sharp discomfort
  • Difficult to seat fully

Altera Orthodontics offers a Retainer Insurance Program to help make removable retainer replacements more manageable after comprehensive orthodontic treatment. This program may provide added support if retainers are lost or broken.

The program may include:

  • Replacement support for removable retainers
  • Help if retainers are lost or broken
  • Guidance through our office
  • A convenient option after comprehensive treatment
  • Possible FSA or HSA eligibility

This program applies to removable retainers that are designed to hold teeth in place. It does not include appliances used to move teeth after shifting has occurred, such as braces or aligners.

A snug fit can be normal, but sharp pain or a retainer that will not seat fully should be checked by our office.

Clean your retainer with a soft toothbrush and warm, soapy water. Avoid toothpaste, dishwashers, hot water, and heat exposure.

The program may help with removable retainer replacement if retainers are lost or broken. It does not cover appliances used to move teeth.
